Chadron State College

Chadron State College (CSC) holds its formal commencement ceremonies twice annually — in May (Spring) and December (Winter) — for undergraduate and graduate students. According to CSC’s graduation information, candidates for degrees must wear academic cap and gown during the commencement ceremony, and regalia (caps, gowns, hoods, tassels) is ordered in advance via the Eagle Pride Bookstore.

In February 2024, CSC announced a new regalia design: undergraduates will now wear cardinal-colored robes, while graduate candidates (Master’s) will wear black gowns. This is a significant shift from the traditional all-black undergraduate gown used earlier.

Regarding honors, CSC publicly recognizes academic distinctions at commencement: Summa Cum Laude (GPA 3.90–4.00), Magna Cum Laude (3.75–3.89), and Cum Laude (3.60–3.74) for eligible undergraduates. The College’s FAQ clarifies that honor medals (not necessarily cords) are handed out during line-up or Ivy Day, while “other honors ropes or medals” may come from specific academic departments or student organizations.

For faculty and graduate regalia, CSC’s public commencement program notes the classic academic design: Bachelor’s gowns have pointed sleeves, Master’s gowns feature square “crescent” sleeves, and Doctoral gowns include velvet facings and three velvet bars per sleeve. Chadron State College Hoods are used to symbolize academic discipline, with the lining representing the institution and velvet color denoting the field of study.

While CSC’s public materials outline its new undergraduate gown color and graduate black gown, there is no detailed publicly published color-chart for honor cords, stoles, or tassels by discipline (beyond the regalia announcement and catalogs). The institution focuses on tradition and inclusivity, allowing academic-society ropes or medals from departments, but does not enforce a broad stole-color coding system via its public resources.
