Chattanooga State Community College

Chattanooga State Community College (ChattState) holds its commencement ceremonies for credit-earning students in the HPF Building gymnasium on its Amnicola Highway campus. Graduates are required to arrive about one hour before the start, dressed in full academic regalia including cap, gown, cords, and medals. Guests must have tickets (up to six per graduate) to enter, and professional photographs are taken during the ceremony.

ChattState provides regalia for its students: caps (square mortarboards for associate, bachelor’s, and master’s) and black graduation gowns for most graduates. For doctoral or terminal degree holders, a soft tam may be used. Master’s gowns feature long cutaway sleeves; doctoral robes typically include three velvet stripes.

Hoods are worn by master’s and doctoral graduates; their linings reflect both ChattState as well as the specific academic discipline of the degree. Among accessories, honor cords are awarded based on Latin honors:

  • Summa Cum Laude (GPA 3.9–4.0) receive gold cords,
  • Magna Cum Laude (GPA 3.7–3.899) have blue cords,
  • Cum Laude (GPA 3.5–3.699) have orange cords.

In addition, graduating veterans wear red-white-blue cords, and ChattState Honors graduates wear green and gold cords. Members of Phi Theta Kappa wear yellow stoles. Faculty and staff (including marshals) wear their highest earned academic regalia during the ceremony.

Overall, Chattanooga State’s commencement reflects traditional academic regalia practices — black gowns, discipline-colored hoods, Latin honors cords, and stoles — while maintaining the dignity and celebration of achievement for students and faculty alike.
