Clayton State University

Clayton State University (CSU) hosts its commencement ceremonies on specified dates in May (spring) and December (fall), celebrating graduates from various colleges in structured convocations. The events are held in the campus Athletic Center, and streamed live for families and friends.

Academic regalia at Clayton State follows traditional formats. Associate degree graduates wear gray gowns, while bachelor’s degree candidates wear black gowns. Master’s gowns feature long closed sleeves with arm slits, and doctoral gowns are trimmed with velvet and display three velvet bars on each sleeve. Hoods are used by master’s and doctoral graduates: master’s hoods are about 3.5 ft long with 3-inch velvet trim; doctoral hoods are 4 ft long with 5-inch velvet. The velvet color on the hood reflects the discipline (e.g., yellow for science, white for arts, drab for business), while the lining shows the university’s colors.

All graduates wear the mortarboard (“graduation cap”), typically with a black tassel or a color that matches their field of study. Doctoral graduates may choose a velvet cap or a mortarboard with a gold tassel.

For honors, Clayton State uses a gold honor cord for students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. In addition, members of recognized honor societies or student organizations may wear approved stoles or cords. Examples include a pink & green stole for Alpha Kappa Alpha, purple & gold for Alpha Kappa Lambda, black & gold for Alpha Phi Alpha, blue & gold for Alpha Phi Omega, red & green cords for Beta Beta Beta, and many more. Unauthorized ornamentation is not permitted; only items on the approved list may be worn.

The academic procession includes a university mace carried by faculty and the presidential medallion worn by the president, symbolizing institutional authority. Regalia guidelines ensure that graduation gown, cap, hood, tassel, honor cord, and stoles align with tradition and university policy, giving graduates a dignified and uniform appearance.
