Davis and Elkins College

Davis & Elkins College holds its 116th Commencement Weekend over two days — a Baccalaureate service followed by the formal graduation ceremony. Graduates rehearse on the Friday before and then walk in the Commencement on Saturday morning in Harper‑McNeeley Auditorium. 

For both Baccalaureate and Commencement, students must wear academic regalia, including a black graduation gown, mortarboard cap, and a red-and-white tassel (e.g., 2024, 2025). Graduates also wear the official D&E hood, which they receive during the Baccalaureate service. 

Honor cords at D&E mark academic distinction.  Davis & Elkins College The color scheme is:

  • White, red & gold cord for Summa Cum Laude
  • White & red cord for Magna Cum Laude
  • White cord for Cum Laude

These are distributed during rehearsal. Additional departmental honor cords are handed out earlier by respective academic departments. 

During the hooding ceremony at Baccalaureate, each graduate chooses a mentor (typically a faculty or staff member) to place their hood, making it a meaningful moment of recognition and connection. 

Overall, D&E’s commencement ceremony follows a classic academic regalia tradition: black gowns, red‑and‑white tassels, scholarly hoods, and honor cords in white, red, and gold — symbolizing academic achievement while preserving the dignity and unity of the graduation event.
