De Anza College

De Anza College holds its annual commencement ceremony, most recently at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Graduates arrive early (doors open around 1 p.m.) and the ceremony begins around 3–4 p.m. depending on the year. The college livestreams the event (with captions), and provides parking and accessibility details for graduates and guests.

Regalia for De Anza graduates follows an academic‑dress tradition outlined in its commencement program. According to their regalia guide, associate‑degree graduates wear gowns that display college colors, while bachelor’s degree recipients wear a simple black gown with long pointed sleeves. Master’s graduates wear a more elaborate gown with slit sleeves. The hood’s color-coded velvet border indicates the degree type, and the hood lining reflects the institution’s official colors.

For honor students, De Anza awards a gold “Honors” stole to students earning Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Summa Cum Laude based on their GPA as of the most recent quarter. Graduation “Grad Packs” (sold via bookstore) include a cap, gown, tassel, and diploma cover. Financial aid is available to help students purchase these packs, though assistance does not cover stoles or additional cords.

Faculty and staff also participate: they are strongly encouraged to don caps, gowns, and hoods and order their academic regalia in advance through the college bookstore. While the public inauguration materials describe the construction of gowns, hoods, and regalia, De Anza’s publicly available sources (handbooks, program PDFs) do not specify distinct tassel colors, honor cords, or discipline‑specific hood lining beyond the general velvet / college-color scheme.
