Elmira College

Elmira College holds its annual Commencement ceremony at Carnegie Lawn, typically in mid-May, beginning around 11:00 a.m.. Graduates assemble by 10:30 a.m. on the west side of campus near the fountain, as detailed by the Registrar’s “Information for Students” page.

Degrees are presented in order—graduate (Master of Science in Education), then Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and associate degrees. Undergraduates with Latin Honors are recognized (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) per GPA thresholds.

Academic regalia is distributed to students during a “Life After EC” event in March; those who miss it may pick up regalia from the Registrar’s Office. Graduates keep their cap, gown, and hood afterward.

Regarding how to wear the regalia: caps are worn “well forward” on the head with the point halfway down the forehead, and tassels start on the right side, then under guidance undergraduates move them to the left during the ceremony. Graduate students, however, are hooded instead of performing a tassel turn.

Importantly, Elmira College’s publicly available commencement documentation does not specify any color scheme for tassels, honor cords, or stoles by degree level or academic discipline. Despite references to Latin honors and regalia distribution, there is no published PDF, handbook, or college contract that provides a consistent set of colors for tassels or academic hoods. As such, students should consult the Registrar’s Office or academic departments for any guidance on color-specific regalia for honor cords and stoles.
