Fresno Pacific University

Fresno Pacific University (FPU), located in Fresno, California, hosts its annual commencement ceremonies for undergraduate and graduate students in May. According to FPU’s Registrar Office, there are two separate ceremonies: one for undergraduates (at 10:00 a.m.) and another for graduate students (at 3:00 p.m.). Graduates line up in Valdez Hall before entering the venue, and they are required to wear traditional academic regalia, including a black graduation gown and a mortarboard cap.

In FPU’s approved commencement regalia policy, students may use either a colored tassel or, for graduate students, a hood. The color of the name card during procession also signals undergraduate (orange) versus graduate (blue).

  • Latin Honors graduates may wear the Phi Gamma Mu cord.
  • There are Outstanding Graduate cords in blue & orange.
  • Theta Alpha Kappa members receive a medallion.
  • The Kappa Mu Epsilon mathematics honor society has a double cord in pink & silver.
  • Phi Alpha Theta (history) students may wear a stole, as do Alpha Chi scholars, who also receive a double cord in blue & green.
  • Phi Alpha (Social Work) is represented by a blue & gold cord, stole, and medallion.
  • Seminary graduates use a white & gold stole.

FPU also offers a Commencement Medallion (zipper‑pull style) tied to donor support: students who give a small gift to the university can pick this up and wear it on their gown.

Notably, FPU prohibits personal embellishments on caps/gowns (such as floral leis or money decorations), insisting on a uniform, formal academic regalia appearance for all graduates.

FPU’s publicly available regalia policies do not detail faculty‑hood colors or discipline‑based gown color schemes; the emphasis is on student regalia (cap, gown, tassel/hood, cords, stoles, medallions) and clearly defined honor‑society regalia.
