Georgia College and State University

Academic Regalia, Cap & Gown

Undergraduate students wear a traditional black bachelor’s gown and mortar‑board cap. The basic tassel supplied is black. Regalia (robe, cap, stole, tassel) is supplied via the campus bookstore — Barnes & Noble at Georgia College in partnership with Oak Hall — or may be borrowed from recent graduates. For master’s (or specialist) degree candidates, a master’s gown with appropriate sleeves, a graduate hood (with piping/lining per discipline), cap, and black tassel are used. A graduate hood + cap/tassel set can also be purchased.

Stoles, Tassels & Honors Regalia

By default, bachelor’s gowns come with a green‑collar stole.

Undergraduate students who qualify for Latin honors (based on institutional/overall GPA criteria) wear a blue‑collar stole instead of green.

In addition, undergraduates may wear extra cords, stoles, or medallions symbolizing membership in honor societies, co‑curricular or identity groups, or other academic distinctions — but these must be worn under the green or blue collar stole.

Graduate students generally do not wear cords or stoles (unless they earned an honor society medal, e.g. from Phi Kappa Phi). Instead, their hood fulfills the role of academic regalia for graduate degrees.

Ceremony & Participation Rules

Regalia must be worn appropriately to participate; inappropriate attire can disqualify a student from walking.

Students may decorate their mortarboard (cap) — but decorations must lie flat, fit the top surface, and comply with the university’s Code of Conduct. The university reserves the right to ask graduates to change the cap if decoration is deemed inappropriate.

Cost & Ordering

As of 2025, a complete bachelor’s regalia set (gown, cap, stole, tassel) costs US $120.98. A bachelor’s stole + cap + tassel (without robe) costs US $67.98.

Graduate regalia is similarly priced. Online ordering begins via Oak Hall; later, regalia can be picked up at Barnes & Noble at Georgia College.

Faculty / Discipline Regalia & Hood Colors

GCSU’s publicly available commencement documentation confirms that graduate hoods use “appropriate color piping and lining” according to the student’s discipline/major. :contentReference[oaicite:21]{index=21} However, **the university does not publish a public master list** of hood‑lining colors or faculty regalia colors on its Registrar or commencement‑info pages. As such, the exact hood or faculty regalia color per discipline is determined at ordering time and depends on student’s major.

Summary

At Georgia College & State University, undergraduate graduates wear a black bachelor’s gown, black cap, black tassel — plus a green collar stole (or blue for Latin‑honors). Honor cords or additional stoles/medallions are allowed under the collar. Graduate (master’s/specialist) candidates wear a black master’s gown, black cap, black tassel, and discipline‑specific hood; additional cords or stoles are typically not used at the graduate level. Faculty and discipline regalia use hood piping/lining per discipline, but GCSU does not publicly list all colors. Regalia is sold via Barnes & Noble/Oak Hall or may be borrowed, and cap decoration is permitted within guidelines. The standard regalia sets cost approx. USD 120–125.
