MiraCosta College celebrates student achievement with a formal commencement ceremony each spring that honors graduates earning certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees. Graduates participating in the commencement must purchase and wear graduation regalia, including the graduation gown, graduation cap, and tassel sets, which are available for online ordering through Herff Jones and pickup at the Oceanside Campus Bookstore. All participating graduates wear the same cap, gown, and tassel regardless of degree level, creating a unified academic appearance at the commencement event.

The graduation gown color is a traditional academic black for all degree levels, providing a classic and professional look in ceremony photos and processional lines. The graduation cap (mortarboard) pairs with a coordinating tassel as part of the cap and gown set; graduates wear the tassel on the right before degrees are conferred and move it to the left to signify completion of requirements. Honor cords are not automatically included with the basic cap and gown set; however, honor distinctions are recognized in the commencement program for students achieving 4.0 GPAs, President’s Permanent Honor Roll, and President’s List. Members of Phi Theta Kappa (the international honor society for two‑year colleges) are eligible to wear a gold stole and tassel with an optional blue cord worn over the stole. Certified Honors Scholars in the college’s Honors Program receive an orange stole with blue trim to represent their achievement.
