Molloy University Commencement Ceremony Overview
The Molloy University commencement ceremony celebrates graduates from Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs in a traditional academic setting. The ceremony is typically held in May at a major venue such as Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, beginning with graduate arrival and procession into the commencement site. Graduates participate in a formal procession, conferment of degrees, and the awarding of diplomas in a ceremony lasting approximately 2–2½ hours.
Academic Regalia: Graduation Gown & Graduation Cap
All candidates walking in the commencement must wear the official graduation cap and gown along with a tassel and hood (for graduate degrees). The academic gown and academic regalia sets are typically ordered in advance through the Molloy bookstore or authorized vendors. Candidates should wear dress attire beneath their graduation gown and cap.
Tassels, Honor Cords & Stoles
The mortarboard cap tassel is part of the essential cap, gown and tassels set for every participant. Tassels symbolize participation and may be moved at the appropriate time during the ceremony (traditional practice). Molloy University also recognizes academic achievement with honor cords called the Fourragère. These honor cords are worn over the academic gown on the left shoulder and come in colors signifying scholastic distinction: white for one year’s excellence, American Beauty rose for two, and gold for three years; a special blue Fourragère honors sustained Dean’s List achievement.
Optional stoles and additional cords may reflect membership in recognized organizations, honor societies or cultural affiliations, complementing the graduation cap and gown. These adornments enhance the traditional academic regalia experience and allow students to showcase achievements in addition to the core cap, gown and tassels sets.
