Montreat College Commencement Ceremony celebrates academic achievement with formal academic regalia including a graduation gown, graduation cap, and tassel sets in traditional style. Montreat College holds separate May commencement ceremonies for the School of Adult & Graduate Studies and the School of Arts & Sciences each year, where graduates process in academic attire, receive their degrees, and honor academic achievement in a Christ‑centered environment.

Montreat College’s commencement regalia sets — including graduation gown, graduation cap, tassels, honor cords, and stoles — combine traditional academic dress with meaningful recognition of scholarly achievement, degree completion, and community honors.

Montreat College Commencement Ceremony

Montreat College holds annual commencement ceremonies each May for bachelor’s, master’s, and adult learner graduates with traditional academic regalia including graduation gown, graduation cap, and graduation tassels. Graduates prepare for a meaningful commencement in Christian academic tradition. Regalia must be ordered through Herff Jones by the deadline set by the Registrar; the College does not stock extra gowns. Undergraduates may wear a matte black gown and cap if formally permitted.

Graduation Gown & Cap

  • Graduation Gown Color: Traditional black academic gown for all candidates.
  • Graduation Cap: Classic mortarboard cap worn with tassel; students may decorate the cap within College guidelines.
  • Academic Regalia: Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates wear appropriate gowns; masters candidates additionally wear the master’s hood during the processional, ceremony, and recessional.

Bachelor Cap & Gown Tassels, Honor Cords, Stoles

  • Bachelor Tassels: Standard tassels accompany the black cap and gown.
  • Honor Cords: Baccalaureate students earning Latin honors wear gold honor cords at commencement.
  • Other Cords & Stoles: College‑issued recognition cords and approved stoles from College organizations may be worn; selections must be pre‑approved by the Registrar’s Office.

Master Cap & Gown Tassels, Honor Cords, Stoles

  • Master Tassels: Master’s tassels are included with cap and gown orders; tassel colors follow College standards.
  • Honor Cords for Graduate Candidates: Graduate programs do not typically offer Latin or GPA honor cords; recognition is based on program standards.
  • Stoles & Pins: Stoles and pins from College‑approved honor societies and academic groups are permitted at commencement.

Faculty Regalia Color & Discipline Regalia

  • Faculty Regalia: Faculty wear academic regalia that reflects their earned degrees from accredited institutions; robes and hoods may include velvet trim and color reflecting degree and institution.
  • Other Discipline Regalia Color: Master’s hoods incorporate satin lining and velvet trim representing specific academic disciplines, though Montreat College guidelines primarily emphasize black gowns with approved accents.
