Providence College

Providence College Commencement & Academic Regalia

Providence College organizes annual graduation ceremonies for students who complete all academic requirements and submit a graduation application. All participating graduates are required to wear official academic regalia consisting of a black graduation gown and mortarboard cap. Graduates can order their regalia in advance through the approved vendor, Herff Jones.

Undergraduate students wear a black gown with a tassel initially positioned on the right side of the cap. Upon conferral of the degree during the ceremony, the tassel is moved to the left. Graduate and School of Continuing Education students wear a black gown, mortarboard cap, tassel, and an academic hood indicating their degree level.

Students who earn honors or are members of approved honor societies may wear honor cords over their gown. Optional commemorative stoles, such as the "Stole of Gratitude," are available through Herff Jones but are not mandated by the college. These accessories provide additional personalization while maintaining the official ceremony standards.

Faculty or staff participation in the ceremony may involve wearing academic-style gowns, caps, or sashes; however, no publicly published faculty regalia color chart is available. All regalia components must be ordered within the designated timeframe to ensure availability before Commencement.
