Queens College (CUNY) Commencement & Academic Regalia

Queens College (CUNY) holds its annual Commencement ceremony each spring on the main campus. Eligible graduates, including undergraduate and graduate degree candidates, must wear official academic regalia as approved by the Registrar. Participation requires ordering the regalia through the designated vendor before the deadline.

Undergraduate students wear a classic black graduation gown and a mortarboard graduation cap with a tassel. Optional red satin stoles may be worn depending on departmental or institutional tradition. Tassels are worn on the right side prior to degree conferral and moved to the left after.

Graduate students, including master’s and doctoral candidates, wear a gown with an academic hood. The hood’s silk lining displays the granting institution’s colors, and velvet edging denotes the graduate’s academic discipline. All gowns and hoods must adhere to Queens College standards to ensure uniformity.

Students may also wear honor cords or stoles for recognition, including Latin honors or approved organizational affiliations such as Greek life, athletics, and honor societies. Cap decorations are permitted only if respectful and not disruptive.

Faculty and staff participating in the ceremony wear formal faculty regalia consistent with academic tradition, including gowns and hoods or appropriate academic headwear corresponding to their highest earned degree.

In summary, Queens College maintains a formal academic regalia policy: black gowns and mortarboards for undergraduates, master’s gowns with hoods for graduates, optional cords or stoles for honors or organizational affiliation, and traditional faculty regalia. Personalized cap decorations are allowed under university guidelines.
