Shasta College Commencement Ceremony & Academic Regalia Overview

The Shasta College commencement ceremony is a structured, celebratory event in which eligible graduates (associates, certificates, and select bachelor-degree programs) wear full academic regalia — cap, gown, and tassel.

Graduates must purchase or order regalia (cap, gown and tassel) by the announced deadline (for 2025, April 24) via the official channel (for example through a supplier such as Jostens, or via the campus bookstore).

The standard graduation gown color at Shasta College is black for all degree levels. Bachelor’s gowns feature long pointed sleeves, Master’s gowns (where offered) have oblong sleeves (slit at the elbow), and Doctoral gowns — for doctoral-level graduates — include additional academic dress: velvet panels on the front and bell-shaped sleeves with velvet bars. The mortarboard cap is standard for all graduates.

The tassel is worn on the right side of the mortarboard before the degree is conferred and moved to the left after crossing the stage. In doctoral regalia, the tassel is customarily gold.

Honors recognition at Shasta College is marked by honor cords: students who qualify for honors (based on GPA, e.g. for associates) are eligible to purchase an honor cord from the bookstore. Additionally, members of honor societies — such as Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) — may borrow or wear stoles/cords during Commencement.

The institution’s academic-regalia approach reflects traditional intercollegiate code: simple black gowns for students with degree-level differentiation via gown design; mortarboard cap with tassel; optional honor cords or approved stoles for honors or society recognition.

Shasta College emphasizes pre-ordering and RSVP procedures — graduates must RSVP and order regalia by specific deadlines to participate in the ceremony.
