Commencement Ceremony & Eligibility
SCTC schedules its Graduation Ceremony annually — for example, the 2025 Spring Commencement is set for May 9 at New Hope Baptist Church. All eligible graduates (including those from prior Summer or Fall terms) may participate. To walk, students must submit a Graduation Application at least one term prior, meet all academic and financial obligations, and pay applicable graduation and regalia fees. Only students whose credentials are cleared by the Registrar and who register by the deadline may attend.
Cap, Gown & Tassel – Official Regalia Package
SCTC requires all participating graduates to wear the official regalia set provided by their vendor: a black graduation gown, mortarboard cap, tassel, and stole. The standard regalia package fee (cap/gown/stole/tassel) is paid separately via the vendor, and only these issued items are authorized for the ceremony. Gowns and caps from before January 2018 or non‑SCTC regalia are not accepted.
Honor Designations, Cords & Special Regalia Items
SCTC recognizes “Honor Graduates” (GPA 3.75–3.99) with an honor cord, and “Honor Graduate with Distinction” (GPA 4.00) with a gold medallion. Students who qualify are notified via email and receive the cord/medallion at check‑in for commencement. Stoles or cords related to club/organization membership may be approved — but only after prior arrangement with the relevant advisor. Unapproved stoles or cords are not permitted.
Regalia Rules & Ceremony Protocol
Graduates must arrive dressed in their full regalia with no extra items — no storage or holding area is provided for personal belongings at the venue. Attire under the gown must be business‑appropriate; jeans, shorts, flip‑flops, or sneakers are not allowed. Tassels are worn on the right side before degree conferral and moved to the left after degrees are awarded. Gowns must be wrinkle‑free, and caps should not include decorations beyond the standard tassel.
Southern Crescent Technical College – Official Graduation Regalia Guide
Graduation at SCTC requires approved academic regalia — graduation gown, mortarboard cap, and tassel — for all eligible graduates participating in commencement ceremonies. Below is a concise overview of what SCTC publicly defines, and where official color‑codes or honor‑cord/stole policies remain unspecified.
Cap & Gown Requirements for Graduation
Every graduate is expected to wear a graduation gown (academic robe) and mortarboard cap as part of the official regalia package for commencement — whether receiving a certificate, diploma, or associate‑level degree.
Standard Tassel & Regalia Set
- Each regalia set includes a tassel paired with the cap and gown for graduation day.
- There is no publicly available guideline or chart linking academic program or credential to a specific tassel or hood color at SCTC.
Honor Cords, Stoles, Hoods & Discipline‑Based Colors
- No public discipline‑color chart available: SCTC does not appear to publish a mapping of majors or degree types to tassel, hood, stole, or honor‑cord colors.
- No documented standard for cords or stoles: There is no publicly accessible policy at SCTC outlining official honor cords, stoles or related color codes tied to honors status or departmental affiliation.
- Guidance for vendors / buyers: Treat any colored hoods, stoles or cords as optional or custom add‑ons. If offering such items, they should be sold with a clear notice: “Color assignments not defined publicly — confirm with SCTC before ordering.”
Advice for Graduates & Regalia Sellers
- Use only the officially approved cap, gown, and tassel set for commencement participation at SCTC.
- Do not assume discipline‑specific colors for tassels, hoods or stoles — SCTC has not publicly codified such schemes.
- If selling additional items (colored cords, hoods, stoles), label them clearly as optional/custom and encourage buyers to verify with SCTC Registrar or Bookstore before purchase.
- Market cap‑and‑gown sets for SCTC graduates as “standard graduation regalia,” and treat any colored accessories as add‑ons rather than standard issue.
