Truman State University

Truman State University holds its spring commencement at Stokes Stadium, requiring all graduates to wear formal academic regalia. Students line up in academic dress, carry a reader card, and wear medallions for honors.

Academic dress for undergraduates and master’s students includes black graduation gowns and mortarboard caps, available via the Truman Bookstore. For honor graduates, Truman awards medallions rather than cords: undergraduates with a GPA of 3.50–3.74 receive an antiqued bronze medallion; 3.75–3.89 a silver medallion; and 3.90–4.00 a gold medallion. Valedictorians are honored with a white satin stole featuring the Truman seal and the word “Valedictorian.”

Graduate students wear hoods for master’s and doctoral degrees. The velvet facing on the hood reflects field of study (e.g., white for Arts, gold-yellow for Science, dark blue for Philosophy), and the lining shows Truman’s institutional colors of purple and white. Faculty wear the academic regalia of the institutions that awarded their doctoral degrees.
