Universities at Shady Grove Commencement & Academic Regalia

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) campus follows UMBC guidelines for commencement ceremonies, celebrating graduates from bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. All participating students are required to wear academic regalia including a graduation gown, mortarboard cap, and tassel. Faculty members also wear appropriate faculty regalia reflecting their highest earned degrees.

Bachelor’s graduates wear a traditional black graduation gown paired with a mortarboard and a black tassel featuring a UMBC medallion. Honors students may receive additional recognition with a red honors cord for a 4.0 GPA or a gold stole for eligible honors (3.5–4.0 GPA).

Master’s graduates wear gowns with longer sleeves, a mortarboard cap, and a tassel, accompanied by a hood representing their degree discipline through specific lining and velvet trim colors. Doctoral graduates wear more distinguished regalia, including a gown with velvet panels, three sleeve chevrons, a velvet tam, and a gold tassel.

Faculty regalia mirrors traditional academic dress, where gowns, hoods, and velvet trim reflect the faculty member’s highest earned degree and discipline.
