UW‑Eau Claire Barron County (UWEC) Commencement & Academic Regalia

The commencement ceremony at UWEC is a formal recognition of student achievement, where graduates don official academic regalia comprising graduation cap, graduation gown and tassels.  For bachelor’s degree candidates, the graduation gown is **blue** with square sleeves, paired with a blue mortarboard graduation cap.  The official tassel colour for undergraduate degrees is blue and gold, worn on the **right side** of the cap until the degree is conferred, at which point it moves to the left. 

For master’s candidates, the graduation gown is **black**, the cap is a black mortarboard, and the tassel remains on the **left side** throughout the ceremony because the candidate already holds a prior degree. Doctoral candidates wear a black doctoral gown with bell‑shaped sleeves and velvet bands, a black tam, and a gold tassel on the left side.  Honor cords and stoles denote academic honours or membership in recognised honour societies: undergraduates may wear gold cords for academic distinction (cum laude, magna laude, summa laude) or silver cords for honour society membership.

The academic regalia policy emphasises uniformity in gown and cap colour by degree level, with the blue undergraduate gown, black graduate gown, correct cap and tassel placement, and proper hoods for graduate and doctoral levels. Undergraduates may also wear stoles representing their country of origin, membership or service, provided approval is granted.  Faculty and platform party members wear regalia corresponding to their academic achievements, with hoods and doctoral gowns reflecting the highest degree earned.
