At Copper Mountain College the commencement ceremony honours graduates in full academic regalia, reflecting the tradition of academic dress and the importance of graduation gown, graduation cap, faculty regalia and tassels sets. Graduates and candidates wear the approved black graduation cap and gown, available through the Campus Bookstore beginning in April. No other uniforms or non‑standard attire may be substituted.
The academic regalia standards adhere to the guidelines of the American Council on Education (ACE). Gowns are not to be decorated, and only a standard tassel is permitted on the graduation cap. Leis, RN or VN pins, and non‑honours adornments are not allowed.
For honor robes and recognitions: membership in Phi Theta Kappa is denoted by a gold honour stole, a blue and gold double honour cord, and/or a gold tassel. The gold key medallion is not permitted. Membership in Alpha Beta Gamma is signified by a sapphire‑blue satin stole. Student Veterans may wear red, white & blue recognition cords. Service Club wears copper & teal cords; EOPS silver; CalWORKs gold; ASCMC peacock blue; the Communication Club white, maroon & teal; the American Sign Language Club red, black & silver cords.
The ceremony is designed to maintain decorum and a consistent look for the graduation faculty, student participants and the audience. The ceremony invites graduates to display personalization of the mortarboard cap (top of the cap only, no 3‑D embellishments and ample room for the regular tassel) while preserving the integrity of the gown‑and‑cap sets. Gowns must remain plain and undecorated.
For guests and family members the event features limited bleacher seating and parking, with graduates limited to five guests each. Graduates should indicate if any guest has disability needs via the Intent to Participate form.
